The stories and parables of Jesus are founded in the heritage of the prophetic parables in the Old Testament. Jesus, however, perfected the oral art of telling parables. Even so, it is rare for his followers today to think of Jesus as a storyteller.
The instances of storytelling by Jesus recounted in the New Testament are far too many to treat here. Nevertheless, the fact that Jesus made such extensive use of stories and parables should cause one to seriously consider oral means of communication in present day contexts. Jesus’ use of parables was so pervasive that Mark 4:34 reports, “He did not speak to them without a parable.” More than one-third of Jesus’ recorded sayings are parables.
